Explore the ancient Maya ruins of Tikal and Guatemala’s incredible Río Dulce and Atlantic coast on this 4 day/3 night tour. Our journey beings as we pick you up from your hotel/lodging early in the morning to take you to the Guatemala City airport to catch a short 1-hour flight to Flores. Once at the Flores Airport, our driver will be waiting for you to escort you and your Heart of Travel tour leader, on the 45-minute journey to the National Park of Tikal where our local guide, Oliverio, will be waiting for us. Inside the park, you’ll be able to appreciate all different kinds of wildlife such as spider monkeys, howler monkeys, orange-breasted falcons, woodpeckers, parrots, and many other unique species. You can choose to either spend the night in the park at an ecolodge or head to the small, but lively, town of Flores for the night, depending on your personal preference!

The following day we will hit the road and make the journey to Río Dulce where we will spend the next two days and nights enjoying our overwater bungalows at the hotel as well getting out on the water on a private boat tour with visits to Castillo San Felipe, all-natural hot springs, the Caribbean town of Livingston and more!

After an exciting 3 day/3 night adventure exploring the eastern side of Guatemala, we will make the journey home on Day Four back to Antigua or Guatemala City, depending on your final destination.

DAY ONE

Your Heart of Travel Tour Leader will pick you up the morning of our first day from your hotel/lodging in Antigua and accompany you to the Guatemala City airport to catch a short 1-hour flight to Flores. From the Flores Airport, you and your Tour Leader will hit the road to make the 45-minute journey to the Tikal Jungle Lodge (45-minute journey). Upon checking-in, you will have time to freshen up and leave your things at the lodge before meeting up with your local guide Oliverio who will be waiting to take you on a guided tour of Tikal National Park.

Inside the park, you’ll be able to appreciate all different kinds of wildlife such as spider monkeys, howler monkeys, orange-breasted falcons, woodpeckers, parrots, and many other unique species. In addition to the impressive flora and fauna, you’ll visit various temples, as well as the Central Acropolis, The Window Palace, and the Lost World. For our adrenaline seekers, upon exploring the park, there will be an opportunity to zipline through the jungle which costs approximately $50 extra.

Upon finishing your tour with Oliverio, you’ll return to the lodge where you can enjoy the afternoon and evening relaxing by the pool or exploring the area. There is a restaurant on-site at the hotel for lunch and dinner!

DAY TWO

You will enjoy your breakfast at the hotel (included) and have some time to pack your things and soak up your final hours in the national park before beginning our journey to Rio Dulce will begin (approx 4-hour drive). Once we arrive in Río Dulce, we will head to our hotel where we will be staying in private bungalows suspended over water along the river. Here we can enjoy the pool and expansive views of the river, as well as delicious dinner and drinks.

DAY THREE

Our day begins with a delicious breakfast (included) overlooking the water before boarding our private boat for a day on the river and ultimately onto the Atlantic!

We will board our private boat once again to explore Río Dulce and the town of Livingston. Our first stop is Castillo San Felipe, an ancient castle that once served as a fortress to protect the land from pirate invasions. Next, we will continue on to the Island of the Birds and then take a dip in the hot springs before the river meets the Caribbean Sea, giving us a view of neighboring Belize. We will then enjoy a late lunch (not included) in the small Caribbean town of Livingston. This is the only part of Guatemala that you find a strong presence and influence of the Afro-Guatemalan culture which is made up almost entirely of people who identify as Garifuna The food here is unique and delicious, loaded with seafood and rich with distinct Caribbean flavors and the town is known for its African drumming.

DAY FOUR

Once again, we will enjoy breakfast (included) at the hotel overlooking the river before taking the boat back to our shuttle to begin the journey back to La Antigua. We can make as many stops along the way for meals, bathroom breaks and to stretch during this 6-hour journey.
