1 Day Cultural Lake Atitlán Tour
Join us on our Lake Atitlán Tour and come on an adventure in cultural immersion around one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lago Atitlán. We’ll pick you up at your Antigua lodging at 7:00 am in our private shuttle or SUV, depending on the size of the group, to begin the approximate 2.5-hour drive to Panajachel. If desired we can also make a quick stop in the charming mountain town of Tecpán to grab an early morning snack.
Once in Panajachel, we’ll take a short boat ride to the town of San Juan La Laguna. Here, we will spend the day learning about the crafts and traditions of the Tzutujil people. This mellow lakeside town has escaped the commercialization of its neighboring towns and the close-knit community that inhabits this village has developed community-based tourism to showcase their traditions without relying on the influence and investment of foreigners.
Our time in San Juan la Laguna will center around visiting our friends at Casa Flor Ixcaco, a women’s led textile cooperative that is truly inspiring and an incredible example of empowered female indigenous entrepreneurs who are using their talents and traditions, on their terms, to bolster their economy and share their heritage proudly.
During your time with Casa Flor, you’ll watch and participate in a weaving demonstration to learn all about the process from start to finish. Afterward, you’ll enjoy a delicious typical lunch prepared by some of the cooperative members before visiting the nearby artisan chocolate workshop and the medicinal plant garden. This medicinal plant garden is run by the local midwives and it’s fascinating to learn about the work they do!
After we finish our time in San Juan, we’ll take a boat to Santiago Atitlán. Here we will learn more about what’s known as syncretism: the mixing of the Mayan and Catholic religions. Our time in Santiago includes a visit to the town’s church, the San Maximón shrine and to visit a woman from the town who will show us the “tocoyal” headdress, an iconic part of this town’s “traje típico”.
Your Lake Atitlán Tour will conclude upon finishing our visit to Santiago we’ll take a boat back to Panajachel to board the private shuttle back to La Antigua.
