Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango Tour 2 Days/1 Night
Join us on this adventure in cultural immersion on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lago Atitlán. On this Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango tour, we will pick you up at your lodging in Antigua at 8:00 am in our private shuttle or SUV, depending on the size of the group, for the approximate 1-hour drive to the nearby farming town of Tecpán. There we will have a traditional breakfast typical of the region (not included and you can spend some time looking at the artisan crafts before we continue on a 1.5-hour drive to the country’s famous Lake Atitlán. Once at the lake, we’ll take a short boat ride to San Juan La Laguna. Here, we will spend the day learning about the crafts and traditions of the Tzutujil people. This mellow lakeside town has escaped the commercialization of its neighboring towns and the close-knit community that inhabits this village has developed community-based tourism to showcase their traditions without relying on the influence and investment of foreigners.
Our time in San Juan la Laguna will center around visiting our friends at Casa Flor Ixcaco, a women’s led textile cooperative that is truly inspiring and an incredible example of empowered female indigenous entrepreneurs who are using their talents and traditions, on their terms, to bolster their economy and share their heritage proudly.
During your time with Casa Flor, you’ll watch and participate in a weaving demonstration to learn all about the process from start to finish. Afterward, you’ll enjoy a delicious typical lunch prepared by some of the cooperative members before visiting the nearby artisan chocolate workshop and the medicinal plant garden. This medicinal plant garden is run by the local midwives and it’s fascinating to learn about the work they do!
After these activities, you’ll have some free time to explore the small art galleries and other shops along the main street in San Juan. In the evening, we will enjoy a homestay with a local family and be able to spend time enjoying daily life in this charming town.
The next morning we will have breakfast with our host family and we will wave goodbye and return to the boat that will take us to our private shuttle. Our next stop is one of Central America’s largest and most famous artisan markets in the town of Chichicastenango.
We will start our day in Chichicastenango at the market where local vendors gather every Thursday and Sunday in the central part of town to offer a wide variety of goods such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, pottery, and even livestock. You can also taste some of the local specialties during your time in the market area. Our walking tour then continues to the Church of Santo Tomás, which dates back to 1540 AD. Here you will be able to see what’s known as syncretism: a mixture of the Mayan and Catholic religions. We will then visit the local cemetery, a colorful place where Maya rituals are still performed. Our tour in Chichicastenango concludes with an incredible multi-course meal with our friends at Proyecto Tux, where you will taste and learn about pre-hispanic cuisine, as well as modern-day agricultural issues and their adverse impact on local culture and the environment. Once your Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango Tour is over we will make the approximate 2.5 drive back to Antigua.
