Iximche Ruins & Tecpán Tour
Don’t miss this chance to visit the Iximche Ruins to learn all about the history of Guatemala’s original capital city while also appreciating the charm and beauty of the nearby farming town, Tecpan Guatemala, making various stops along the way for breakfast (or lunch depending on the tour time you choose) and artisan crafts stand.
First, we’ll pick you up at your hotel/lodging entrance in a private shuttle or SUV, depending on the size of the group, to begin the approximately 1-hour drive to the Iximche Ruins.
Iximche was the capital of the Maya Kaqchikel Kingdom from 1470 until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1524, where they also established the first capital of Guatemala. The remains of the site include a number of pyramid-temples, palaces, and two Mesoamerican ball-courts and to this day Maya rituals are still performed at this site on important occasions.
Learn about the ancient Maya civilization, the 5000-year-old Maya calendar, astrological observations, and how the modern-day Maya people view their culture from one of our local guides who was born and raised in the area. After spending a couple of hours exploring and hearing all about this amazing site we will head back to Antigua.
