Sumpango Kite Festival 2019
Option #1 – Half Day
Sumpango Kite festival
8:00 am: Your shuttle will be waiting for you at the Tanque de La Unión Park, to take you to see the amazing Kite Festival held in Sumpango, about half an hour from Antigua. According to the Kaqchikel’s cosmogony, the kites represent a way of communication between the dead (the saints) and the living. It is believed that on that day the souls of the ancestors are released for twenty-four hours where the spirits are free to return to their homes, their loved ones, and their descendants. So on this day, the municipality of Sumpango celebrates with its famous annual Kite Festival. We will see the magnificent, giant kites that different community groups from Sumpango have been working on for months prior to the event, cutting and pasting different colored paper to create priceless pieces of art. The kites often display important messages, including messages regarding love, caring for the environment and women’s rights. The kites vary in size from 2 to over 20 meters in diameter. They are made purely of tissue paper so that, even though they are large, they can be flown when the wind permits. Enjoy a great morning being part of this tradition on this very special day!
12:00 pm: Head back to Antigua.
Option #2 – Full Day:
Sumpango Kite Festival and traditional mask workshop
12:00 pm: For those looking to taste the true flavors of Guatemala, after the kite festival we will go for an authentic culinary experience at our friend Joaquin’s cooking school, Cuscun. Cuscun is located in the family home of a local resident in the town of Jocotenango. During lunch, you will learn about traditional Guatemalan food and cooking techniques passed down over centuries, and you’ll make your own tortillas! You’ll share the fruits of your labor on a rooftop terrace with beautiful views of the town and the volcanoes surrounding it. This experience will give you a look into everyday life in Jocotenango and a new appreciation for sharing a home-cooked meal with family and friends. We can accommodate any and all dietary interests and restrictions, just talk to us! Provecho!
3:00 pm: Our traditional mask workshop will take place at Cuscun’s beautiful terrace space, with expansive views of the mountains and Agua volcano. For centuries, the indigenous population has carved extraordinary masks that show us the various and colorful expressions of the Guatemalan culture. These masks play an essential role in rituals, dances, dramas and religious ceremonies of Guatemala. First, we will be learning about the masks and its meaning, then, we will give you your own wood mask that you can paint as you want. Each of you will have your own personalized mask to take back home! Beverages will be available for purchase during the workshop.
5:00 pm: Drop off in Antigua.
