Antigua Artisan Workshop: Wooden Masks
Join us in a wooden mask workshop where you’ll go home with your very own custom-designed mask, perfecting for hanging on your wall and remembering your time in Guatemala! We will meet you at your lodging in Antigua and from there head to our friend Joaquin’s terrace where our traditional mask workshop will take place, complete with volcano views!
For centuries, the indigenous population has carved extraordinary masks that show us the various and colorful expressions of the Guatemalan culture. These masks play an essential role in rituals, dances, dramas and religious ceremonies of Guatemala and reflect the Maya cosmovision. Before diving into painting your mask, we will learn about the masks and their meaning from a local woodworker and artisan who makes these masks, and other wooden crafts, for a living. We will then enjoy painting our maks on the terrace, listening to music and enjoying this opportunity for cultural exchange. When finished, each of you will have your own personalized mask to take back home!
Water and juice are provided during the workshop and alcoholic beverages and snacks will be available for purchase if desired.
